As I sit here and eat a giant bowl of Stove Top as my main and only entree for dinner I realized I spend entirely too much on gear, just as fast as that thought hit me I remembered how I just upgraded my coverage for my beloved gear in the event of anything going wrong with it. I was always under the impression that plain old renters insurance (homeowners for some) was sufficient and to stop being such a fag about it. Well it turns out that most regular policies aren't going to cover most of your stuff with anything past theft and fire exclusively.
So I decided to get on the internet and do some investigating, man the internet is fucking sweet. As I sit there in my standard daze into the monitor I'm just reading pages and pages of complete horror stories of gear essentially getting put out of commission one way or another and the owner being left out cold with no coverage. It got as bad that some insurance companies wouldn't even consider it theft if you weren't put in harm during the act, however, if it just shows up missing (i.e. left in your car) it may be lambed as a "mysterious disappearance" and wouldn't be covered. Granted I've known a lot of folks to make out fine with their normal renters or homeowners policy but frankly I realized I was in no position to risk it (this goes back to being a little bitch).
After more horror stories and reading I came upon a good discovery that I knew was of value to me and I'm going to share. They call it "Floater" or "All-Risk" insurance, most all companies provide this but it's not something normally advertised. These are just additional plans added to your existing that essentially cover your gear in almost all circumstances. My particular company said it's not covered for just normal mechanical failure or nuclear warfare, yeah I'll repeat that one again.. Nuclear Warfare. I was kind of shocked at first, I figured it'd be full of grey areas and such. So I began drilling the sales rep with a barrage of scenarios and she was just whipping through them saying "covered...... covered too, yep so is that....." No longer is blatant theft and fire the only covered incidences, the most major cause of incidents is also covered....... stupidity. Flying skateboards, dropping cameras, water damage, etc... No longer a problem.
Overall I couldn't complain, the sales rep and I spent around and hour or so inventorying all my gear then we determined the premium, It added about $82 a year on my renters insurance plan. I couldn't complain, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind. Companies have varied amounts depending on the value of your gear and if you use it for business use, personal use or perhaps a mixture of both.
I urge anybody that is unsure to give their company a call and find what they can offer you, then send me an email letting me know how awesome I am. Granted I could have made a forum post with this same info, it'd probably be less painless... I never was exactly an english major, however, this seems like the best way to get the word out. Look into it shitheads.
